Review of "Asulon" by William McGrath

This book is one of the best I've read in some time. Everything about it is excellent; the pace of the story, the well-drawn characters, the attention to detail. The story is full of subtleties at every turn, especially for those who are familiar with the Bible. There were also hints of Celtic mythology and many historical allusions. All this rich depth gave me great pleasure as I read and added immeasurably to the story. It's definitely the kind of book you'd want to read several times to fully appreciate it.

Asulon is the first installment in "The Sword of Fire" trilogy, a Christian fantasy series set in an alternate midieval version of America. The second book in the series, Eretzel, has been recently published and I look forward to reading it as soon as I get an opportunity. The third installment is not currently finished yet.

Mr. McGrath is an expert in martial arts, and his expertise is apparent in his descriptions of combat scenes.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves high fantasy with a Christian flavor. I would say it's suitable for ages 12 and up; anyone who is old enough to read chapter books.
The book is available on Amazon, I believe only in paperback edition. Here's the ordering info:
